How Much Does Packaging Design Cost?
Packaging design cost in the UK, at our level, is £3,500 to £14,000 per product line before VAT. The number of SKUs, the complexity of the structure and whether print-ready, production-aligned files are included decide the figure. One label sits at the bottom; a multi-variant range with a custom structure and unboxing sits at the top. EPR fees are separate.
How much does packaging design cost? For a UK brand working with a specialist studio, our packaging design price is £3,500 to £14,000 per product line, before VAT. The figure depends less on the look of the pack than on how many items you have and whether the work arrives production-ready.
| Scope | Packaging design price per line | Included |
|---|---|---|
| One product, standard label or carton | from £3,500 | Design, material guidance, print-ready files, dielines |
| Multi-SKU range in one family | £3,500 to £14,000, depending on SKU count | Each variant on-brand yet distinct, files for every SKU |
| Range with custom structure and unboxing | up to £14,000 | Bespoke structure, special finishes, unboxing, production-aligned dielines |
What sets packaging design prices
- Number of SKUs. A single product costs less than a range in which every flavour, scent or size must read as one family while staying distinct on the shelf.
- Structure. A standard label or tuck-end carton is simpler than a bespoke structure, foils, embossing or a designed unboxing.
- Production readiness. Finished packaging includes material choices, print-ready artwork and accurate dielines. A render that cannot be manufactured is unfinished, and finishing it properly is part of the fee.
Packaging cost in the UK beyond the design fee
Packaging cost is wider than the design fee. Print runs, materials and finishes are quoted by your printer, and under UK Extended Producer Responsibility the business placing packaging on the market pays fees based on material and weight, which a lighter structure or simpler material mix can lower. When comparing a packaging design agency with a freelancer, ask who handles printer liaison and files; that is where hidden costs appear.
Why cheap packaging ends up costing more
Cheap packaging that skips audience research and production checks can look fine on screen, then underperform on the shelf in Waitrose or an independent deli or fail at the printer. Shoppers choose in about two seconds, so a weak pack loses sales every day it is stocked.
How we scope a packaging project
Every packaging brief we accept includes material thinking, print-ready files and production-aligned dielines from the first concept, and is scoped to your SKU count and structure. We work mainly with food, beverage, beauty, wellness and lifestyle brands.
FAQ
Are UK packaging EPR fees included in the design price? No. EPR fees are paid by the business placing packaging on the market, based on material and weight; design can lower them, but they are billed separately.
Is the price per product or per range? Normally per product line. A range costs more than a single item, since every variant has to belong to the same family and still be easy to tell apart on the shelf.
Why do production files matter to the cost? Packaging that a printer cannot produce is only a picture. Accurate dielines, print files and material specifications are part of the design job, and they are a real share of what the fee covers.
